Grana Padano PDO Cheese Protection Consortium
The Consortium is active in the implementation of initiatives for the national and international promotion of the gastronomic and cultural heritage of its production area. The numerous promotional projects carried out over the past decades have led to Grana Padano being the most consumed PDO cheese in the world.
GRANA PADANO PDO CHEESE PROTECTION CONSORTIUM
The Grana Padano Protection Consortium is a body recognised by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Ministerial Decree of 24 April 2002). It protects, promotes and enhances Grana Padano PDO cheese, providing information to consumers and protecting its status as a PDO. It also has the important task of ensuring compliance with the traditional recipe, as indicated in the Production Specification Rules filed with the European Commission (Regulation (EC) No. 510/2006).
Finally, together with the third-party Certification Body CSQA, the Consortium checks that every wheel of cheese is produced according to the Production Specification Rules, so that it can obtain PDO recognition and be marked with the Grana Padano brand, all while protecting it from fraud in Italy and abroad.
The Grana Padano Protection Consortium is located in the heart of the Grana Padano PDO cheese production area, which stretches along the entire “Pianura Padana” (Po River plain) and includes 34 provinces from Piedmont to Veneto and from Trento to Piacenza. Today the actual production is concentrated in 13 provinces.
